Ukrainian holidays. St.Nicolai's Day

Traditionally, December 19 is recognized as St. Nicholas' Day. On this day parents and relatives try to surprise their kids by placing small gifts, toys, or books into symbolic shoes or stockings or even under their pillows. People consider St. Nicolas first to help with any appeal and trouble.
St. Nicolas is the most well known Saint from the Kievan Rus era.   St. Nicholas history in Ukraine goes back to the 10th and 11th centuries. In churches, his icons are prominently placed on the iconostas, usually next to Jesus, the Mother of God, or the patron saint of the church. His icons were found also in nearly every home.
He may arrive on foot or on a sleigh. He is normally dressed in a bishop's robe and is usually accompanied by angels who help distribute gifts and goodies from St. Nicholas' sack.
